Our structure and staff

The AFC has funding for 65 members of staff, excluding the Commissioner.

We are committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace and aim to maximise the talent of our team by attracting, retaining, and developing people with diverse skills, increasing representation at all levels to build a workforce where differences are recognised and valued.

The Senior Leadership Team

The Commissioner is supported by a senior leadership team comprised of the AFC Director, a Chief Operating Office and Chief of Staff.

This team is responsible for ensuring the office of the AFC has the appropriate skills, experience, and seniority to oversee the Commissioner’s portfolio day-to-day, and to maintain consistent, high-quality investigations across all areas of the Commissioner’s remit.

The Corporate Operations Team

The Corporate Operations Team covers the full breadth of the AFC’s corporate requirements. Their work covers areas from business management, information and policy to communications and statistics. Some of their responsibilities include production and delivery of the Commissioner's Annual Report; providing key statistical data; monitoring expenditure in-line with managing public money; management of the Commissioner's communications; and the monitoring of all of the Commissioner's recommendations.

The Investigation Team

The Investigations Team discharges the Commissioner's investigations function. This is done by conducting independent and impartial investigations and producing decision reports.

The team carry out all stages of the investigations process under delegated authority from the Commissioner. This includes decisions to accept a matter for investigation, conducting individual and thematic investigations, making findings and recommendations and preparing, disclosing and signing investigation reports. The team are also responsible for liaising with other Relevant Bodies within Defence to ensure oversight of any cases transferred for investigation.

The Assessments Team

The Assessments Team is the frontline of our office. They are the first point of contact for anyone:

  • Making an application to the Commissioner, or
  • Seeking information about the Commissioner's powers and processes.

They can provide information about the complaints processes, but not advice about whether a person should make a complaint. The decision to make a complaint can only be made by the individual.

The team ensure that every individual contacting our office is treated with the utmost care and concern. They often deal with very sensitive issues but they are not a crisis or welfare service.
